Acts – Our Story

When the first disciples gathered in Jerusalem to receive the power of the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost, the message they were given was, “Go into all the world and tell the the story.” And so they did. That little band of believers carried the message that God was doing a new thing into Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.

How that happened is the story of Acts, the story of the forming of the Church we know today as Christianity. In Acts we read about Peter who once denied even knowing Jesus but was now empowered to bring thousands into relationship with the living God. We learn about the travels of Paul who was literally knocked off his horse by the Holy Spirit before becoming the greatest missionary the Church would ever have.

In Acts we see the baby Church struggling to be born. We read about the tensions surrounding questions of leadership, money, theology, ethics, and the old way bumping up against the new way. We see the Church working through crises to come to truth.

We could say we know how the story ended, but the story is not finished. It is our story, and it is still instructive and inspiring for those who seek to follow Christ into new lives of love and hope.

To get started reading the Acts of the Apostles, we have prepared an annotated list of Bible studies and  commentaries. This fall we will produce some podcasts and other resources on the themes and content of Acts. We value your feedback.
