In 2016, before he retired, then Diocesan Bishop Gary Lillibridge wrote our online study for Advent. The study explores the role of Isaiah as told in the Old Testament readings for the Sundays in Advent. Since, in the Episcopal Church, we use a three-year cycle of scripture readings for Sunday worship, the readings for 2016 and 2019 are the same, and we can once again enjoy wise teaching from our former bishop for this Advent.
Our church year always begins with the first Sunday in Advent – in 2019 on Sunday, December 1. The three-year cycle of Sunday readings is cleverly titled years A, B, and C. (However, daily scripture readings are in a two-year cycle: Years 1 and 2.) The Sunday readings for 2019-2020 are from Year A. It is the season of Advent. And we wait. We wait for the Christ to come and fill the empty places in our lives, in our relationships, in our hearts.
The prophet Isaiah knew the Christ was coming and tried to tell God’s people. Mostly they did not listen. Will we?
This four-week Advent study looks at the context in which Isaiah spoke during his time and considers how his words apply to our lives today.
