Repairing breaches – Bringing peace

Week four of Prepare the Way, the 2019 Advent study
from the Episcopal Diocese of West Texas.

Among the many names by which Isaiah describes the coming messiah, “Prince of Peace” fully resonates with us during the Christmas season.  Peacemaking, says Bishop Gary Lillibridge in this week’s lesson, includes repairing breaches. As we foster peace in our own families, communities, and nation, where might we be called to repair breaches?

Going Home

Week three of Prepare the Way, the 2019 Advent study
from the Episcopal Diocese of West Texas.

Isaiah frequently speaks of God providing a way for God’s people to return to Him. In the reading for this week, the prophet describes a “highway of holiness” where the redeemed will travel unmolested on their journey back to God.

Peaceable Kingdom

Week two of Prepare the Way, the 2019 Advent study
from the Episcopal Diocese of West Texas.

In one of his most memorable images, Isaiah describes a coming time of peace. “The wolf shall live with the lamb,” he says. “The leopard shall lie down with the kid, the calf and the lion and the fatling together, and a little child shall lead them” (11:6).

Consider, says Bishop Gary Lillibridge, what it means that God does not change wolves into lambs or vice versa, but rather transforms them so they can live in peace with one another.

How might you determine to live in peace this Advent?

Tools of Peace

Week One of Prepare the Way, the 2019 Advent study
from the Episcopal Diocese of West Texas.

The prophet Isaiah, whose message speaks of the coming Messiah, sees a time when men will “beat their swords into ploughshares, and their spears into pruning-hooks” (2:4). In other words, weapons of war will become tools for living in peace.

In this week’s study of Isaiah, Bishop Gary Lillibridge asks us to consider  which of our swords and spears we and God might transform into tools for peacemaking in our families, jobs, friendships, environments, and thinking.
